What Is Gua sha?

Gua sha uses a smooth-edged tool to scrape the skin in short, firm strokes. While cupping lifts tissue and massage presses into it, Gua sha works along the surface. This technique promotes blood circulation, relieves muscle tension, and supports lymphatic drainage

At Triune, Gua sha isn't a separate add-on; our Acupuncturists integrate it into your treatment when it's appropriate for your body.

How Gua sha Works

Your Acupuncturist uses a smooth tool — typically stone, jade, or resin — to scrape along the skin, usually over the neck, shoulders, back, legs, or (more gently!) over the jaw. The scraping motion breaks up fascial restrictions, moves stagnant blood and lymph toward the surface, reduces muscle tension, and supports circulation to the area being treated.

Pressure and speed are adjusted based on the area and condition being treated.

Benefits of Gua sha

Gua sha is particularly helpful for chronic neck and shoulder tension, TMJ and jaw tightness, sinus congestion and puffiness, restricted mobility from fascial adhesions, and lymphatic support for reducing swelling.

What to Expect Gua sha

Gua sha feels like a firm, dragging pressure on the skin; it's unusual at first but generally well-tolerated. Most patients find it relieving, especially in areas of chronic tension.

Gua sha typically leaves a mild flush or  redness, or small surface marks where blood has been drawn up. is This is normal and due to increased surface blood flow. The marks are painless and fade within 3–7 days depending on circulation and tissue health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gua sha therapy hurt?

Most patients find gua sha comfortable — a firm scraping sensation rather than pain. Pressure is adjustable based on your tolerance.

What do the marks from Gua sha mean?

Darker or more pronounced marks indicate more stagnation or restriction in that area. Lighter marks suggest healthier tissue and better circulation. The marks are not bruises and are usually painless.

How long do Gua sha marks last?

Typically 3–7 days. They fade faster with good hydration and circulation.

Can Gua sha be combined with massage or acupuncture?

Yes, that's exactly how we use it at Triune. Cupping is integrated into your chiropractic or acupuncture session when your clinician determines it will benefit the areas being treated.
